Expanded polystyrene sheeting is commonly used in the construction sector due to its exceptional insulation properties. EPS sheets are used in both commercial and residential construction, predominantly seen in rendered wall systems, under slab insulated flooring, cool rooms, and roofing. Furthermore, EPS sheets are used in formwork to fill in voids and cavities.

The lifespan of an EPS panel can be extensive, often mirroring the life of the building in which it’s installed. These panels are designed to endure for decades, withstanding various environmental factors without significant degradation. Their resistance to moisture and mould, as well as their ability to retain structural integrity and insulation properties over time, contribute to their longevity.

While EPS insulation is highly effective, it can be less breathable than other materials and may require additional vapour barriers. What this means is that the expanded polystyrene can trap moisture more readily, potentially leading to condensation issues if not properly managed with ventilation. Additionally, EPS is flammable, although it is often treated with fire retardants to reduce the risk. 

EPS panels are not inherently waterproof but are moisture-resistant, making them suitable for many applications where occasional dampness may occur. In scenarios where prolonged exposure to water or very high humidity is expected, additional treatments or waterproofing measures may be needed. This can include the application of waterproof coatings or the use of physical barriers.
